H E R B A L // G L O S S A R Y: Goats Rue (Galaega officinalis)

Goats Rue is a cooling astringent herb known for its very specific use in the management of blood sugar metabolism and diabetes.

Native to Europe and the Middle east, it has been used historically in herbal medicine to treat tuberculosis and is a popular galactagogue, used to increase milk supply.

The plant belongs to Fabaceae family along with its cousin the legume.

Goats Rue contains active constituents’ chromium (which has the effect of lowering blood sugar levels), flavonoids (kaempferol, quercetin), and saponins.

Its botanical name "Galega" is derived from "gala", meaning milk, and "ago", meaning "to bring on".

Actions:  Antidiabetic, galactagogue, hypoglycaemic

Indications:

Endocrine: pancreatic insufficiency, metabolic syndrome, non-insulin dependent diabetes, hyperglycaemia

Reproductive: insufficient lactation

Pregnancy / Breastfeeding safe:  Safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
