What are Adaptogens?

If you have been following Little Wildling Co for a while, you may have picked up that we are complete “herb nerds” or Herbalists if you want to be technical about it. We love herbal medicine because the herbs potent active constituents work synergistically with our body systems to help bring us back to or maintain homeostasis.

More and more of these constituents are being studied in clinical trials and the health benefits are being proven. One of our favourite actions of herbs that we harp on about are adaptogens which simply means ‘balancing’ or to help the body ‘adapt’.

Studies have revealed that adaptogens exhibit neuroprotective, anti-fatigue, antidepressive, anxiolytic, and CNS stimulating activity. Additionally, several clinical trials demonstrated that adaptogens exert an anti-fatigue effect that increased mental load capacity, particularly in those with poor stress tolerance and adrenal fatigue.

The stress—protective action of adaptogens, is linked to the regulation the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and also regulation of key mediators of the stress response.

As people are dealing with chronic stress more and more, this is one class of herbs we feel is so important in daily life, as we know how much stress can negatively impact our health.

At Little Wildling co, we use a number of adaptogen herbs in our tea blends so that you can support yourself daily while drinking a comforting cup of herbal tea.
