Marshmallow Root (Althea officinalis)

That’s right, it’s not just a sugary thing you used hold over a fire until it melted and burnt your tongue off. Marshmallow root is a medicinal herb used since ancient times to heal and protect.

Due to Marshmallows mucilage content, it’s best known for its soothing and healing action on the body. It’s a clever one too, as the demulcent effect seems to work across several body systems including respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary systems.  It’s also a used topically as a soothing emollient for dry and itchy skin conditions.

Actions: Demulcent, reflex demulcent, emollient, expectorant, anti-inflammatory

Indications: Gastro-oesophageal reflux, peptic ulcer, gastritis, asthma, acute or chronic bronchitis, dry spasmodic cough, cystitis, urethritis, dysuria, GIT inflammation, IBS, constipation, colitis. Topically for abscesses, dry itchy skin and burns.
